General Support and Scholarship Program

General Support and Scholarship Program

The General Support and Scholarship Program provides support and scholarships to attend Heritage Academy to students who show promise, and whose families do not have the financial capacity to pay. Currently, there are 350 students on full scholarships, and approximately 650 students with substantial financial aid packages. An annual full scholarship provides tuition, books, a daily meal, and bus transportation to and from the school (if required). All parents are required to pay a minimal charge (even if their child is on full scholarship), plus pay for a uniform.

Heritage Academy Summer Program

Heritage Academy Summer Program

The Heritage Academy Summer Program operates a supplementary educational program for several weeks in July and August each year for approximately 200 students primarily in the public school system.  This is one way The Schoerke Foundation tries to have an impact beyond the students enrolled at Heritage.  A standard curriculum is offered in mathematics, English, French general science and social studies to assist the success rate of students.  In addition, alternative subjects are taught including creative writing, critical thinking, geography, entrepreneurship, philosophy, music, art, ethics and agricultural science.

The program has become a vibrant and growing one for the Foundation.  It is the primary vehicle used to connect American volunteers (and hopefully someday volunteers from other countries) to contribute to the work of the Foundation.  So far, with special thanks to a partnership between the Foundation and Westtown School in Westtown, Pennsylvania, about 137 American volunteers – teachers, high school students, business executives, retired people, musicians, and college students have gone to Ghana to teach in the summer program, experience the culture and give something of themselves.

Secondary School Scholarship Program

Secondary School Scholarship Program

The Schoerke Foundation Secondary School Scholarship Program provides funding to deserving Heritage graduates to quality private secondary schools.  Many secondary schools in Ghana are boarding schools and as a result, the cost runs about $200 per year.

Currently, there are 30 Heritage graduates attending secondary school under Schoerke Foundation Scholarships.

American Scholars Program

American Scholars Program

The American Scholars Program provides grants to American students to go to Ghana in the summer for three weeks to teach in Heritage Academy's summer program, and be immersed in the local culture.  It has realized amazing results with many  participants describing their experiences as being transformational.

Capital Investment and Capability Development Program

Capital Investment and Capability Development Program

The Capital Investment and Capability Development Program provides infrastructure and long term capital and capability development investments to the Heritage Academy (and eventually other qualified schools in Ghana).  To date, this program has provided;

  • A bus to transport students
  • A 15,000 book library
  • A secondary school classroom building, currently under construction, consisting of 8 classrooms that will accommodate 100 students.

Current needs include:

  • A computer lab
  • A water transport and purification system
  • Expanded electricity service

In the future, in addition to other capital needs, we hope to provide a long term teacher development fund which will ensure teachers are paid a small premium over competing schools to ensure we attract and retain the most qualified teachers.  In addition, we recognize that continuous training and professional development is needed to be sure we provide the highest quality of teacher in our schools.
